Antioxidants, what you should know
The definition of antioxidants is: a substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to counteract the deterioration of stored food products.
I’m sure by now that you have heard about the benefits of taking supplements or eating foods that are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are great for the body and help to maintain good health, they help to prevent or delay some types of cell damage as well. Most fruits and vegetables are a rich source of antioxidants and if you are staying fit and exercising regularly then you are most likely already eating a ton of fruits and vegetables, if not I suggest you start because as you know by now it’s important to eat healthy. If you are not sure weather or not your eating foods high in antioxidants we can help you out. Below is a list of fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and would be a great addition to your every day health regimen.
1. Goji berries
2. Wild blueberries
3. Dark chocolate (a favorite for the women)
4. Pecans
5. Artichokes
6. Elderberries
7. Kidney beans
8. Cranberries
9. Blackberries
10. Cilantro
Most of these items can be picked up at your local grocery store or organic supermarket. Side note, most of these foods will lose some of their antioxidant “powers” when cooked so try to eat them raw if you need a high amount. If you are someone who would rather take supplements to get you daily health boosts then we also have a list of those as well.
1. Vitamin C
2. Vitamin E
3. B-12
4. Folic acid
5. Alpha-lipoic acid
6. Manganese
7. Selenium
8. Zinc
9. Amino-acid
10. L-carnosine
11. N-acetyl cysteine
12. L-taurine
13. Melatonin
14. Coenzyme Q10
Some of these supplements can be found at your local drugstore or pharmacy if not you can find all of them online and possibly for a cheaper price. I don’t endorse any certain brand because I have found that they all work about the same (but that’s me). If you are having trouble deciding which brand is best for you, you can either ask the pharmacist at your local drug store or you can ask your doctor (he will have a little better insight on the subject as well).
Taking these items daily will be beneficial to your health and fitness routine and should be maintained. As with any supplements, it is best to check with your doctor to make sure that they do not counteract with any current medications you might be taking.
Staying on a regular, healthy diet may help you to keep your weight under control and might help you to live longer (after all isn’t that what we all want ?) and with these added antioxidants it just might keep you from getting sick ever again (but that’s not a guarantee, nothing in life is).
As always, stay active and stay healthy.
